Team Precedent Study to Convert Congress Street from Car-Access to Pedestrian and Streetcar

Masters of Science in Planning, Fall 2012

 

Sustainable transportation course brought under-grad and planning graduate students together to discuss the contemporary forms of transportation and the reemergent of lost transit, such as the streetcar.

 

Our team investigated current and past pedestrian zones to identify the conditions that created either a successful or failure pedestrian and transit zones.  The idea was to apply this to Congress Street in the heart of Downtown Tucson.  Congress Street is a popular distination for food, entertainment, and night life activities; which the streetcar now passes through with multiple stops.  The final was presented to study the new streetcar, only finished this summer 2014, for a few years to understand the altered vehicluar and pedestrian patterns, watch commerical and residential development along its route and on Congress, and slowly implement the pedestrian and transit zone.
